Google Halts Advertising and Monetization in Russia
Google has announced the suspension of advertising and monetization services in Russia, including for Russian YouTube creators. The company’s contextual advertising service, AdSense, will cease operations on the Russian internet and deactivate accounts belonging to Russian users. This decision is linked to the censorship measures imposed on the YouTube platform in the country, which were announced by authorities following the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. YouTube is owned by Google.
“We will deactivate all AdSense accounts with Russia as their location. This means it will be impossible to earn from monetization through such accounts,” stated the Google Payments team.
AdSense allows for the automatic placement of text and graphic advertisements that are contextually relevant to the content of the websites where they are displayed. Last week, Russian YouTube users reported that the hosting service in their country had been completely shut down. Many Russian bloggers recorded videos discussing how sanctions are affecting their nation. Those who have left the country and relocated to other nations shared videos about their lives in Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and similar locations.
