Mayor Nicușor Dan announces delay in building a Multipurpose Hall in Bucharest
Mayor Nicușor Dan expressed his disappointment over the lack of a Multipurpose Hall in Bucharest and announced that the project will not be realized anytime soon. According to him, such a project would take 5-6 years to complete, which would require another mandate as well.

The Mayor of Bucharest explained why the project announced by Gabriela Firea in 2019 has not been implemented yet. The contract aimed at constructing a modern Multipurpose Hall with 20,000 seats near the National Arena, on the land where the parachuting tower is located.
Nicușor Dan admitted that the project was considered but deemed inappropriate: “Any match or concert held at the National Arena blocks the entire area. It would have been a mistake to build the Multipurpose Hall there.”
The Berceni neighborhood is now being considered as a better location for the project: “The Berceni neighborhood is seen as a more suitable location for the Multipurpose Hall.”
The Future Development of South Zone in Bucharest
My intuition tells me that we should focus on the South Zone, because we need to balance the city. It is an opportunity for us that we still have available land in the South Zone. Here we will discuss with urban planners, with specialists,” said the mayor.
Financial Support for CSM Bucharest Handball Team
Mayor Nicușor Dan agrees that the City Hall should continue to financially support the CSM Bucharest Handball Team, but the final decision will belong to the General Council. Currently, in the General Council, PSD and PNL form a hostile majority against the current mayor. However, starting from October, a new majority will be formed based on the results of the local elections on June 9. “It is important for this team to compete internationally, because it is a brand of Bucharest,” the mayor stated. Additionally, Nicușor Dan supports the salary of Cristina Neagu.
The Highest-Paid Handball Player in CSM Bucharest Team
The salary of the highest-paid handball player in the CSM Bucharest team is not extravagant. According to sources from the city hall, Cristina Neagu’s salary amounts to 20,000 euros net per month. This information was revealed by Mayor Nicușor Dan during an interview on Prima TV.
When asked if the City Hall will continue to finance the CSM Bucharest handball team, Mayor Nicușor Dan stated that the decision will be made in collaboration with the General Council. Despite media reports claiming that they pay the highest salaries, the reality is that the team’s budget ranked 7th among the teams in the Champions League. Unfortunately, the team missed out on the Final Four due to budget constraints, as the top four teams in the league require a higher budget allocation.
The Importance of International Competitions for Bucharest Teams
It is always our goal to be in the top four, however, our budget is ranked at number 7. Despite this, we have consistently been in the top 8. While our objective has been to reach the top four, it was somewhat unrealistic considering our budget ranking. It is important for teams like Rapid, Dinamo, and other Bucharest teams to participate in international competitions, as they represent the brand of Bucharest.
I don’t believe that doubling our budget to aim for winning the Champions League is necessary. I think the team functions very well as it is,” stated Nicușor Dan on Prima TV.
Handball player Cristina Neagu, who is the highest-paid player in the CSM Bucharest team, has been accused in the sports media of receiving an excessive salary from public funds. When asked if he shares this opinion, Nicușor Dan declined to comment.
Upcoming Changes in Bucharest’s Infrastructure
The General Mayor has announced that by 2028, 500 out of the 1,000 kilometers of Bucharest’s network will be upgraded. This initiative aims to improve the city’s infrastructure and enhance the overall quality of life for its residents.
The Market of Women’s Handball Players in Romania
In a recent statement, Nicușor Dan denied allegations of underpaying female handball players at CSM București. He explained that players who left the team for higher salaries at other clubs were simply following the market dynamics of women’s handball. Each player negotiates their market value, which can vary by around 5%, similar to any commercial transaction. The total budget of the team, rather than individual player salaries, is the key factor.
CSM București’s Budget and Star Player
Sources from the General City Hall revealed that Cristina Neagu, a multiple-time national champion and winner of the Champions League, receives a monthly salary of 20,000 euros. The handball team CSM București operates with an annual budget of 3.6 million euros, with 2.8 million coming from public funds and the remaining 800,000 from private sources, as reported in the sports media. Despite this budget, CSM București failed to qualify for the Final Four of the Champions League in the recent season, losing to the French team Metz.
