Romania Maintains Competitive Energy Prices
The Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, emphasizes that Romania continues to be one of the countries with the lowest electricity and natural gas prices in the European Union. He cites Eurostat data indicating that during the first quarter of this year, Romania recorded the fourth lowest price for natural gas paid by consumers, and the fifth lowest for electricity among EU member states.

Continuing Price Trends
“In the first quarter of 2024, our country achieved the fourth lowest price for natural gas and the fifth for electricity. We are optimistic that this trend will persist into the second quarter, thanks to the adjustment and extension of the price capping scheme until March 31, 2025. Although the heatwave has caused higher prices in the spot markets, this has not adversely affected household bills,” states the Minister of Energy.
Forecasting Innovations
Burduja mentions that data received for June from major electricity suppliers shows that billed prices were up to 14% lower than the established price cap, “thus protecting consumers and the state budget.” He underscores that strategic investments remain a priority for Romanian authorities.
Investment Initiatives
“Last week, I signed 25 additional financing contracts worth over 3.5 billion lei for the modernization of electrical distribution networks. In total, we have secured nearly 7.5 billion lei in non-reimbursable European funding for networks, exceeding any funding in the last three decades,” adds the minister.
Future Plans
He also notes that this autumn, a competitive call for investments in electricity storage capacities worth 150 million euros will be launched. “My main concern, along with my team at the Ministry of Energy, remains protecting consumers and ensuring access to energy at fair prices, now and in the future,” concludes Burduja.
