Seeking Better Opportunities Abroad
After numerous cases of Nepali workers fleeing their country, we asked Nepalis about the wages they expect when working abroad. They replied that they are willing to work hard, but expect to earn over 1,000 or 1,500 euros per month. For them, North Macedonia is not a challenge, but their goal is to go to one of the developed European countries where they can earn more and provide a better life for their families. They say that if they are going to work abroad, they want it to be worth it and feel a sense of accomplishment.
Nepalese workers in Croatia
Nepalese workers are satisfied if their salary is above 1,500 euros per month. The basic salary in Croatia is 840 euros. These amounts are for regular working hours, but if they reach 12 hours of work, they receive more pay. Nepalese workers go to Croatia because they can earn between 1,200 to 1,500 euros. However, they do not stay long in Croatia as they are not satisfied with the salary. Instead, Nepalese workers go to countries like France, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, and Greece. They work hard there, aiming to build their future and support their families.
Seeking Better Opportunities Abroad
My friends went to Croatia, but they didn’t find it ideal and moved to countries with higher salaries. Croatia is not that great. People are now heading to countries with better incomes. People are leaving Nepal to earn faster. “I am now in the UAE, but I am planning to move to a European country,” says Jugen Lama from Kathmandu.
Looking for Higher Salaries
Suman Upreti, who lives in the same city in Nepal, believes that Macedonian salaries are not attractive. “It would be good for Nepalese people to earn 1,000 euros per month,” he adds.
In Skopje, Prilep, Pehcevo, and Sveti Nikole, in recent months, people are…
Workers from Nepal Disappear
Reports have surfaced that workers from Nepal have gone missing.
“Before they arrived, they knew the salary they would work for and it was higher than in their own country. But, this was just a stepping stone for them to leave for Croatia or Greece,” said a company from where the workers fled.
A Macedonian company confirmed that the workers who fled the country posted photos on social media showing that they had left for the region to work by the sea. Among the workers who fled were individuals aged 27 to 38. They were employed in the textile industry.
The Global Migration of Workers
In 2022, Croatian media reported that Nepalese workers were coming to work in the country, but many of them were also fleeing to other nations. According to Bosnian media, Nepalese workers are also employed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Recently, workers from Bangladesh were seen fleeing from Skopje. It is worth noting that a few years ago, Nepal was among the 30 poorest countries in the world, according to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
