Foreign Direct Investments in Romania on the Rise
Foreign direct investments in Romania totaled 3.342 billion euros in the first five months of this year, an increase of 35.57% compared to the 2.465 billion euros from the same period last year, according to the National Bank of Romania.

“Foreign direct investments in Romania amounted to 3.342 billion euros (compared to 2.465 billion euros in the January-May 2023 period), of which equity (including estimated reinvested earnings) amounted to a net value of 2.930 billion euros, while intragroup loans recorded a net value of 412 million euros,” the statement said.

Foreign Companies in Romania
In the first five months of 2024, a total of 2,879 foreign-owned companies were established in Romania, representing a 1.2% decrease compared to the same period in 2023, according to Agerpres. These new companies had a total subscribed capital of nearly $14.359 million, which is a 16% decrease from the subscribed capital of firms registered in January – May 2023, amounting to $17.1 million.
In May 2024, 571 foreign-owned companies were registered (-8.9% compared to the same month in 2023), with a subscribed capital of 1.95 million lei (-77.3%). The majority of registrations were in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (26.09% of the total), professional, administrative, scientific, and technical activities (21.54% of the total), and transportation, storage, and communication (17.86%).
By the end of May 2024, there were 254 foreign-owned companies operating in Romania, demonstrating the country’s attractiveness to foreign investors despite the slight decrease in new registrations.

There are currently 105 foreign-owned companies in Romania, with a total subscribed capital exceeding 70.643 billion dollars. These companies come from various countries around the world and operate in a wide range of industries, contributing to the economic development of the country.
