Greece Ranks Fourth in European Tourists’ Preferences
Greece has moved up one spot in the rankings of European tourists’ preferred destinations, now sitting at fourth place for 75% of citizens in the Old Continent who are looking to travel in the upcoming months. This marks a 6 percentage point increase from the previous year.
Increased Tourist Spending in Greece
According to the latest survey from the European Travel Commission (ETC), Greece has seen the highest increase in tourist spending in Europe during the first half of 2024. Travel expenditures in Greece and Spain have risen by 25%, in Italy by 20%, and in France by 16%. Mediterranean destinations are particularly popular among European travelers, with many opting for sun-filled beach vacations.
The survey also shows a significant rise in travel interest among Europeans for the period between June and November 2024. This increase is largely driven by a strong desire to travel among Spanish, Italian, and British tourists. In fact, eight out of 10 respondents from these countries expressed a willingness to travel during this time frame.
Travel Trends in Europe
A recent study on travel trends in Europe has shown that a significant number of Europeans are planning to travel in the upcoming months. According to the study, 36% of Europeans are planning to take at least one trip, which is a 6% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 33% are planning a second trip, while only 24% are planning three or more trips.
Popular Destinations
With summer in full swing, Mediterranean destinations are in high demand, with 45% of European travelers opting for warmer locations for their next holiday. Interest in Southern Europe has remained stable compared to 2023, but has decreased by 10% from 2022, except for Greece. Western (18%) and northern destinations (13%) are also popular choices. Spain and Italy are the top choices, each preferred by 8% of respondents, followed by France at 7% and Greece at 6%. The preference for sun and sea trips remains strong, with 19% of travelers choosing this type of holiday in the next six months. Other popular choices include culture and heritage holidays (17%) and nature and outdoor excursions.
The Importance of Safety in Choosing a Travel Destination
When it comes to planning a vacation, the safety of a destination is paramount for travelers. Research shows that 16% of people consider safety to be the most important factor when deciding where to go on holiday. This makes sense, as no one wants to put themselves at risk while exploring a new place.
Following closely behind safety is the appeal of pleasant weather, with 13% of travelers citing this as a key factor in their decision-making process. After all, who doesn’t want to soak up the sun or experience a winter wonderland while on vacation?
Other factors that play a role in choosing a travel destination include the opportunities available in the area, such as outdoor activities or cultural experiences, which 11% of travelers prioritize. Additionally, having friendly locals and stable temperatures are also important considerations for 8% of people when planning their trips.
