Investment in LNG storage unit in Pagasetic Gulf unlikely to be implemented
Environment and Energy Minister Thodoros Skylakakis informed Parliament that a potential investment in a floating LNG storage unit in the Pagasetic Gulf is unlikely to be carried out due to lack of sustainable economic and political support.
Decision by Regulatory Authority of Waste, Energy and Water
A New Democracy and a SYRIZA deputy raised concerns about the decision made by the Regulatory Authority of Waste, Energy and Water to approve the investment. The decision was made against the opposition of the local community, local government, and scientific agencies.
Minister’s Response
Minister Skylakakis stated that Greece’s current LNG needs are already met by the Revithoussa and Alexandroupoli stations, therefore, the proposed investment is not essential for the country’s energy security. He also mentioned that the investment may serve interests outside of Greece. At this stage, the minister believes that the investment lacks economic and political sustainability, and is unlikely to be implemented.
