Improving Work Conditions and Wages in Macedonia
According to Left, the working conditions in some industries are dangerous, and Macedonia has the lowest minimum wage in Europe. As a party that advocates for the rights of workers, the Right to Work #Left treats it as a fundamental human right because people secure their existence through it. Unfortunately, workers in Macedonia are considered the lowest paid in Europe, and the conditions in which they work pose an additional, and perhaps even more serious, problem. In Macedonia, workers’ job security is a major concern.
Workplace Safety Concerns in Macedonia
Last year, 15 workers lost their lives in workplace accidents in Macedonia, with a rate of 2.16 fatalities per 100,000 employees in 2023 – a significant increase compared to the previous year. In comparison, the average rate of workplace fatalities in EU countries is 1.76 cases per 100,000 workers. This data highlights a pressing issue in Macedonia’s labor market.
High Number of Work-Related Injuries
A total of 93 work-related injuries were reported last year, equating to a rate of 13.42 injuries per 100,000 employees. These numbers underscore the urgent need for improved safety measures and regulations in workplaces across the country to protect workers from harm.
Workplace Safety and Minimum Wage in Macedonia
In 2022, there were 21.21 workplace injuries per 100,000 workers in Macedonia. This statistic is concerning, especially when considering the high number of unreported accidents. It falls far below the standards set by the EU, which we aspire to meet.
Furthermore, according to Eurostat, Macedonian workers receive the lowest minimum wage in Europe. When combining this with the poor workplace safety record, it is clear that the rich are benefitting at the expense of the poor. The new government led by DPME and ZNA must address these issues to improve the well-being of workers in the country.
The Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Economy
The Ministry of Labor has been placed under the Ministry of Economy, signaling a shift towards policies that favor capital over the interests of workers. This prioritization of capital at the expense of workers is concerning and must be addressed.
Protecting Workers’ Rights
In order to protect the rights and interests of workers, it is essential to take a stand against the oligarchy in power. The Left supports the demands of unions and workers for an increase in the minimum wage, as we cannot allow one class to enrich themselves at the expense of hardworking individuals.
Protecting Workers’ Rights
The government should implement strict control over the work of the Labor Inspectorate, which is the only defense protecting the rights of workers. We encourage employees to report any illegal actions by employers and investors that violate their rights! Especially when it comes to workplace safety and health,” added from the Left. We are open to collaborating with trade unions and articulating the problems faced by workers in the Parliament in order to overcome them through legislation.
