MetaMask Launches Pilot Program for Exclusive Digital Card
MetaMask has officially announced the pilot launch of the MetaMask Card, a digital card powered by Mastercard and fintech platform Baanx. This new offering allows users to spend cryptocurrencies for their everyday purchases.
According to a recent press release, the card is currently available to a limited number of users in the European Union and the United Kingdom. At this stage, the MetaMask Card is restricted to a few thousand exclusive digital cards. Users must store their cryptocurrencies on-chain within the Linea network, using MetaMask to delegate funds to the card.
As a self-custodial wallet, MetaMask enables users to maintain complete control over their private keys. “This gives people more freedom to spend their assets; in this case, crypto,” stated Lorenzo Santos, senior product manager at Consensys, emphasizing that the MetaMask Card represents a significant step in bridging blockchain technology with traditional payment systems.
The MetaMask Card operates similarly to other crypto debit cards powered by Baanx, such as the CL Card, which allows Ledger users to spend their crypto anywhere Mastercard is accepted. Additionally, other crypto debit cards, like those offered by Coinbase and Crypto.com, also enable users to spend their digital assets in traditional contexts, albeit through centralized custodial platforms.
