A widespread series of technical failures, erupting from the US to Asia, have disrupted services of airlines, banks, and the London Stock Exchange following an online services outage by Microsoft, as reported by Bloomberg.
Official data shows that the first failures appeared in the US on July 18 and were attributed to a Microsoft service outage, including Azure and 365.
Frontier Airlines, a unit of Frontier Group Holdings Inc. based in Denver, reportedly halted flights for over two hours, citing issues with Microsoft’s online services.
On X, the company stated in the morning of July 19 that their systems were affected by a Microsoft service interruption, which also impacted other companies. In this context, the disruption caused significant inconvenience and financial losses for the affected businesses.
Technical Issues Impacting Global Services
Recent reports have indicated that a number of companies have been experiencing technical difficulties that have affected various aspects of their operations. According to Jan-Patrick Barnert, Senior Reporter at Global Equity Markets, there have been low trading volumes during the global disruptions. For example, only 44,000 contracts were traded this morning for Euro Stoxx 50 Futures, which is 50,000 contracts less than usual at this time of day.
