Local Authorities in Moldova to Implement 612 Projects in 2024
A total of 612 projects, amounting to 2.8 billion lei, are set to be carried out by local authorities in the Republic of Moldova as part of the National Program for European Villages, edition 2024. Today, Andrei Spînu, the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, announced the winners of the competition, highlighting that the majority of municipalities applied for the construction or expansion of water supply and sewage systems, with 223 projects totaling a budget of 1.59 billion lei. Additionally, 198 projects were selected for the construction, renovation, or rehabilitation of public buildings and historical monuments, including initiatives aimed at enhancing energy efficiency. Furthermore, there are 104 projects focused on the construction and reconstruction of sports facilities and buildings dedicated to social services, including healthcare infrastructure. Other projects include 57 aimed at street lighting installations and 30 for the production and supply of energy using renewable resources.
Impact of the Projects on Local Communities
According to Minister Andrei Spînu, the 612 projects, once completed, will lead to significant infrastructure improvements across Moldova. This includes the construction of 1,172 kilometers of water supply networks benefiting over 85,000 households, and 221 kilometers of sewage systems serving approximately 21,000 households. Additionally, 455 kilometers of street lighting will benefit more than 104,000 residents, and 215 public and social-purpose buildings will be reconstructed and rehabilitated. This encompasses 52 kindergartens, 37 secondary schools, 62 sports complexes, and 63 cultural centers, along with playgrounds, recreational areas, libraries, and multifunctional centers. Over 570,000 residents will enjoy improved conditions in these facilities, alongside the establishment of 36 photovoltaic parks with a total power capacity of 2.8 MWh.
Regional Distribution of Projects
In terms of regional implementation, the Central region will see 256 projects, the North 199, the South 130, UTA Gagauzia 15, and Chișinău 12 projects.
Recognition and Future Steps
“Congratulations to the 612 projects that have won funding under the European Village Program, an initiative by President Maia Sandu. I would like to express my gratitude to the mayors and commend them for submitting excellent project proposals. This time, we observed a significant increase in the number of projects presented. We will conduct another round and be prepared for the absorption of pre-accession funds,” remarked Prime Minister Dorin Recean at the beginning of today’s government meeting.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister announced that the government will approve the list of winning projects on August 21. “Immediately after August 21, we will sign contracts, and mayors will commence the implementation of the projects,” emphasized Minister Andrei Spînu.
