Prime Minister Invites Agricultural Representatives for Discussion Amidst Drought Crisis
Representatives from the agricultural sector in the Republic of Moldova, who have requested the declaration of a state of emergency in agriculture and the passing of a law for urgent agricultural loans this week, have been invited by Prime Minister Dorin Recean for a discussion.
“The government is closely monitoring the situation in the agricultural sector. We understand the difficulties faced by many producers due to the severe drought, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry is gathering and verifying information based on the requests received. On Tuesday, I will invite agricultural representatives for discussions. The government and farmers share a common mission in the upcoming period – to assist those most affected by the drought while being aware of the real possibilities of the budget,” Recean stated in a Facebook post.
In this context, the Prime Minister emphasized that farmers should adopt a “wise approach.”
“As much help as we would like to provide, we must consider the existing budget. Only such a wise approach will lead to solutions that genuinely assist farmers,” added the cited source.
The official reminded that the government has increased the funding for subsidies by an additional 100 million lei.
“As in previous years, the government is supporting farmers and implementing measures to partially compensate for losses. During the budget revision in July 2024, we allocated an additional 100 million lei to the subsidy fund,” concluded Prime Minister Recean.
In a plea addressed to the head of state, several farmers from southern Moldova described the “disastrous situation” they find themselves in, which could lead to the bankruptcy of their businesses. Among the farmers’ requests is the adoption of a long-term mechanism for providing compensation in cases of natural disasters.
