EU Wheat Exports Decline in the First Two Weeks of the 2024/25 Season
In the first two weeks of the 2024/25 season, the European Union exported a total of 788,201 tons of soft wheat, a 48% decrease compared to the 1.5 million tons exported during the same period in the previous season, as announced by the European Commission. However, the Commission noted that its data is incomplete, according to Reuters.

During the period of July 1-14, 2024, Romania was the largest exporter of soft wheat in the EU, with a total of 286,450 tons, followed by Germany (80,410 tons), Lithuania (75,002 tons), France (73,316 tons), and Latvia (70,762 tons), as reported by Agerpres.
Additionally, in the first two weeks of the 2024/25 season, the EU exported a total of 409,546 tons of barley, a 42% decrease compared to the same period in the previous season.
European Grain Market Overview for the 2023/24 Season
During the 2023/24 season, Romania saw a decrease in the production of both barley and corn, with a total of 47,927 tonnes of corn produced, marking a 39% annual decrease. Despite this decline, Romania remained the largest exporter of barley and corn within the EU, exporting 371,406 tonnes of barley and 36,844 tonnes of corn in the first two weeks of the agricultural season that started on July 1, 2024.
On the other hand, according to data from the European Commission, EU imports of soft wheat increased by 71% annually, reaching 292,703 tonnes, while corn imports grew by 21% to 903,946 tonnes.
Market Trends in the European Union
Among EU member states, Spain emerged as the largest importer of wheat at the beginning of the 2024/25 season, importing 198,892 tonnes. Additionally, Spain was also the largest importer of corn within the EU, bringing in 4,000 tonnes.
EU Import Data for July 1-14, 2024
During the first two weeks of July 2024, the European Union imported a total of 49,789 tons of agricultural products. Ukraine emerged as the largest supplier of corn and wheat to the EU during this period, providing 595,493 tons of corn and 201,766 tons of wheat.
Furthermore, the data shows that the United States was the second largest supplier of corn to the EU in the early weeks of the 2024/25 season, delivering 162,150 tons. This already surpasses the total volume of corn supplied to the EU in the 2023/24 season.
Export Data Discrepancies
The European Commission has highlighted discrepancies in export data for France since the beginning of the 2024 calendar year. Additionally, export and import data for Bulgaria and Ireland have been incomplete since the start of the 2023/24 agricultural year.
France is the largest exporter of wheat in the EU, while Bulgaria also plays a significant role as a wheat supplier.
