Romania and Serbia Sign Memorandum for Gas Pipeline Development
Romania and Serbia have officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at enhancing the interconnection of their natural gas systems through the Recaș–Mokrin pipeline. This strategic agreement was signed by Romania’s Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, and Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović, as reported by local sources.
Investment and Infrastructure Details
The pipeline project, valued at €87 million, will provide Serbia with access to the BRUA gas pipeline, linking the gas transmission networks of both nations. Spanning a total length of 97 kilometers, the interconnector will primarily be situated in Romania (85 km), where a measurement station will also be established. The pipeline is designed to have a bidirectional capacity of 1.2 billion cubic meters per year.
Within Romanian territory, the gas transport pipeline will connect with the BRUA pipeline located in the Petrovăselo area of Timiș County. Both countries aim to commence actual construction by next year, with expectations to complete the investment by 2028. This initiative is regarded as a significant advancement in strengthening energy security and fostering regional market integration by diversifying supply routes.
Significance for Energy Security and Market Integration
In a statement from Romania’s Ministry of Energy, it was highlighted that today marks a pivotal moment in the mutual connectivity of natural gas transport systems between Romania and Serbia. Minister Burduja emphasized the importance of facilitating energy flow between the two nations, which would ensure two key outcomes: a genuine, competitive market that provides fair pricing for consumers, and enhanced energy security through the de-isolation of energy systems and diversification of supply sources.
The project aims to position Romania as a regional leader in the energy sector and a provider of geopolitical stability. According to Minister Burduja, these combined efforts, along with the infrastructure investment itself, will foster trust, economic growth, job creation, and overall development throughout the region.
