Western European Countries Implement Stricter Tourist Regulations
As tourism continues to surge, several nations in Western Europe are beginning to enforce stricter regulations. For instance, in certain regions of Spain, smoking on beaches has been prohibited, and individuals wearing football jerseys are no longer welcome in many restaurants.
Regulations in Italy and Spain
In select Italian cities, tourists can face fines for taking photos in crowded areas. Benidorm, a popular resort on Spain’s Costa Blanca, imposes fines of up to €1,200 on tourists who swim or sleep on the beach at night. Barcelona has also banned smoking on its beaches, and some restaurants have implemented dress codes that exclude patrons wearing football shirts.
Growing Restrictions Across Europe
More countries are adopting similar measures. According to Cristina Pipias, a representative from a travel agency, Greece, a favorite destination for many Romanians, has introduced new rules regarding the spacing between sunbeds. Authorities frequently measure the distance between them to ensure compliance. In Venice, strict limitations have been placed on the number of visitors allowed on the island, with groups restricted to no more than 25 people.
Venice’s Ongoing Battle with Over-Tourism
Venice has taken significant steps to manage tourism, including a ban on large cruise ships since complaints from residents about noise reached a peak ten years ago. Those who violate this regulation risk fines amounting to several hundred euros. In Portofino, located in northwestern Italy, tourists taking selfies in crowded spots may incur a fine of €275.
Common Sense Regulations and Local Practices
Travel agency representatives assert that these rules are grounded in common sense, often advising travelers planning vacations abroad. Pipias notes that in Romania, such regulations are not enforced as strictly, particularly regarding monetary fines. For example, there are no beaches where one could be fined for smoking, though there have been efforts to promote cleanliness and responsible behavior in private beach areas. Some zones prohibit placing towels in the front rows of the beach.
Tourism Spending on the Rise
A report from the European Commission indicates that tourists are expected to spend a record €800 billion in Europe this year, reflecting a nearly 40% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels.
