Government Support for Cereal Producers
The government is aware of the challenges faced by cereal producers and will continue to support this sector. We are seeking financial resources to assist farmers. At the same time, only through the implementation of science and technology can we ensure a bountiful harvest. These statements were made by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who undertook a working visit to the southern part of the country to assess the state of field crops and the extent of their impact, given the recent high temperatures and lack of precipitation. Dorin Recean was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Vladimir Bolea.
Challenges Faced by Farmers
Representatives of local authorities in Cantemir, Cahul, and Taraclia, as well as farmers in the region, discussed the cereal harvest and highlighted the pressing issues farmers are currently facing. Among these, the main difficulty lies in the lack of irrigation for the land.
Challenges and Solutions in Agricultural Production
According to the Prime Minister, the existing problems affecting agricultural production and profitability in the region can be overcome through investments in advanced irrigation technologies, expanding the range of crops, using adapted hybrids, and respecting crop rotation. In addition, among the medium and long-term actions to be taken to ensure more efficient agricultural activities, close cooperation between experts and agricultural communities is essential, along with the adoption of legislative changes that will support farmers’ activities. The Prime Minister encouraged discussions and consultations through Agricultural Chambers, as well as making decisions based on economic and scientific calculations. “It is clear that we cannot continue with traditional working models. Solutions exist for both the short and long term. We are studying them together with the experts.”
Supporting Farmers in Adapting to New Realities
Experts are discussing the challenges faced by farmers in agricultural communities and will be conducting field visits to communicate with each individual farmer. Additionally, farmers require accessible financial tools to adapt to the new realities. In this regard, the ministry is now benefiting from international expertise, learning from the best practices of foreign experts.
The state is already making significant investments in building irrigation systems. Furthermore, we have set out to establish a mutual fund, on which we are working intensively and which will be operational by 2025. This fund will be managed by future Agricultural Chambers and will serve as a support mechanism for farmers, helping them cope with losses caused by natural disasters such as drought and hail,” stated Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea.
During the period of July 12-17, the heatwave continued to expand and intensify, with the air temperature reaching up to +40°C in the background.
Challenges in the Agricultural Sector Due to Climate Change
One of the major challenges faced by the agricultural sector is the lack of precipitation. Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry has established a task force, which includes researchers, to address the challenges that the agricultural sector is facing as a result of climate change.
