Training for Local Authorities on BG-ALERT Usage Begins Next Week
The training for local authorities on how to utilize the BG-ALERT system will commence next week, with over 40 applications already submitted. This was announced by the director of the Main Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection, Chief Commissioner Alexander Djartov, in an interview.
Emergency Declaration Procedures Explained
Djartov explained that declaring a state of emergency follows a specific procedure. The mayor of the affected area must consult with all members of the established crisis management team and take the necessary measures. Both the BG-ALERT system and the National Early Warning System, as well as the media, can be used to alert the population.
Ongoing Battle Against Wildfires
The fight against wildfires continues across the country. One of the latest outbreaks occurred in the municipality of Brezovo in Plovdiv. An emergency state was also declared in the municipality of Harmanli due to a significant fire that broke out on Monday. Currently, there is no danger to populated areas, as all fires that emerged yesterday have been contained. The fire has been brought under control in both the Plovdiv region and the Harmanli municipality. Djartov noted that the fire has been extinguished in several locations within Plovdiv.
Firefighter Injuries and Safety Measures
Djartov addressed the situation involving two firefighters who were injured while combating a fire near Vurshlets, after their fire truck overturned. Both individuals are in stable condition; one has lacerations on the elbow, while the other suffered three broken ribs.
Fire Situations in Neighboring Regions
Regarding the wildfire in North Macedonia, which is raging three kilometers from the Bulgarian border, the chief commissioner stated that there is currently no threat to Bulgaria, as the fire is moving in a north-west direction. Fire and forestry teams are on-site, and preventive measures such as creating firebreaks are being undertaken.
On the wildfires in Greece, it was noted that Bulgaria has offered assistance in the form of two fire trucks with 15 personnel. As of now, our southern neighbor has not yet accepted this offer.
Public Advisory on Fire Safety
Djartov urged citizens not to light fires in nature. He reported that the reason Bulgaria ranks among the top countries in Europe for wildfires this year is due to lush vegetation and the challenging terrain where these fires have occurred. Another significant factor is the strong winds.
