Increasing Moldovan Apple Exports to the European Union
In the season of 2023-2024, the exports of Moldovan apples to the European Union have practically doubled, from 12 thousand tons to 22 thousand tons. The main destination for Moldovan apples is Romania, accounting for 90% of the total export to the EU.
The data was presented by the Association “Moldova Fruct,” marking the end of the 2023-2024 export season for Moldovan apples. According to statistics, Moldova exported 133 thousand tons of apples from the 2023-2024 harvest to over 30 countries worldwide, compared to 124 thousand tons in the 2022-2023 season.
Exporting apples to the Middle East has also increased from 6,146 thousand tons to 8,085 thousand tons. The 2023-2024 season highlights an important trend: producers and exporters are diversifying their markets, exploring new opportunities, stated the executive director of the “Moldova Fruct” Association, Iurie Fal?
The Diversification of Moldovan Apple Exports
In the 2022-2023 season, 85% of all apples exported from the Republic of Moldova reached the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union. However, the market has since diversified, with this share decreasing to 77%. At the same time, quantities of apples delivered to new destinations such as Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Israel have increased. Additionally, a batch of apples has reached India for testing purposes.
“To maximize the benefits of this shift, it is essential to strengthen collaboration in the export sector and reduce excessive fragmentation of the supply. A unified approach will enhance the promotion of Moldovan apples on alternative markets and facilitate access to new export opportunities,” said Iurie Fala.
Association members emphasized the need to focus more on the quality of the apples produced, so that they can compete and be competitive on any market.
