Alkaloid, a pharmaceutical manufacturer from Macedonia, has recently opened a subsidiary in Romania with the goal of increasing their team, product portfolio, and brand popularity in the region. The company has experienced an average annual growth rate of over 12% in the past five years, and aims to strengthen its position locally.
By establishing a presence in Romania, Alkaloid hopes to maintain its growth pace and capitalize on the opportunities in the local market. The General Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Zivko Mukatov, sees this expansion as a strategic move to boost the company’s performance and enhance its visibility in the region.
Alkaloid targets global expansion
Alkaloid, a company present in almost 50 countries, is aiming for global expansion. In its headquarters in Skopje, the market in Romania is considered strategic, and local operations saw a 66% increase in sales in the first year. Alkaloid offers around 20 products in the Romanian market, out of a portfolio of nearly 250 products from the pharmaceutical company.
“The plans for Romania aim to increase the team, expand the product portfolio, and enhance the brand’s popularity,” says Zivko Mukaetov, General Director and President of the Board of Directors at Alkaloid.

The company now employs close to 3,000 people at its headquarters in Skopje and has 22 subsidiaries across the region.

“Our main goal in the first year of activities in the local market was to build a strong team, and we managed to surpass our sales target by 30%, exceeding 10 million euros in 2023. In the first four months of this year, our consolidated sales in the local market were 27% higher than in the same period last year,” Stolevski highlights.
Expanding into New Markets
According to Darko Stoleski, the business model of Alkaloid is currently focused on expanding into new markets, which is a top priority for the company. In Romania, their story is not entirely new, as some of their products were already present in the Romanian market through local partners before they opened their branch there almost two years ago.
Their collaboration with the local market dates back to 2004, making their products well known among doctors, pharmacists, and consumers alike. This expansion into new territories is part of their strategy for growth and development in the pharmaceutical industry.
Creating a Strong Connection Between Brands
One important goal was to establish a connection between brands already known to healthcare professionals and the brand ‘Alkaloid’ as a manufacturer, since the subsidiary appeared later than the products. For most doctors, Xifia and Forexo were well known, but the image of the ‘Alkaloid’ brand had to be built from scratch,” the company representative added.
