The Wesselényi Castle: A Historical Gem in Sălaj
The Wesselényi Castle, once put up for sale by its heir and sold in 2021, has had its sale contract annulled by the Sălaj court. Today, it stands as one of the most spectacular tourist attractions in Sălaj, covering an area of 2,200 square meters and featuring two floors. The castle was constructed between 1779 and 1796.
A Rich Historical Legacy
Located in Jibou, the Wesselényi Castle is among the most impressive historical monuments in Transylvania. It has deep roots in the history of Hungarian nobility and European architecture. The castle complex consists of several buildings and structures, showcasing remarkable architecture and a rich history.
One of the earliest constructions in the ensemble is the “curia,” a modest noble residence also known as the “old kitchen.” This building was rebuilt in 1702 by Baron István Wesselényi and Countess Kata Bánffy. It underwent restoration in 1749 by the next generation, István Wesselényi and Polixenia Dániel.
Architectural Influences and Developments
The stable, built in 1775 by István Wesselényi and Polixenia Dániel, reflects the influence of craftsmen who also worked on the Bonțida estate. Originally meant for the family’s stud farm, the stable still retains a baroque-inscribed decoration. The Wesselényi family crypt, although nearly vanished today, was commissioned by the same patrons and housed gravestones of family members dating back to the late Renaissance. In 1771, Miklós Wesselényi constructed a riding arena, and significant work on the palace began in 1778. Czech architect Franz Wrabetz played a crucial role in completing the construction, which was interrupted in 1781 due to a conflict with a neighbor and resumed only in 1796.

The palace was finally completed in 1810, with its interior adorned with paintings by renowned Transylvanian artists Franz Neuhauser and Johann Martin Stock. Following nationalization, the castle underwent major transformations, resulting in a complete overhaul of its interior. Over the years, the palace has served various purposes, including as a general school, high school, boarding house, pioneers’ house, city museum, and experimental station for young naturalists.
