Healthcare Crisis on Croatian Islands
The healthcare system on the Croatian islands is facing a significant crisis, particularly on the island of Krk, where the oldest active doctor is 80 years old. The medical staff is overwhelmed with work during the peak tourist season. Physicians report that they handle over 130 patient consultations daily, while the ideal number would be around 40.
Doctors and nurses on Krk have taken to the streets to protest in front of the local government. “According to recent statistics, there are 35,000 people in Malinska. Currently, my practice is the only one serving this area. In winter, Krk hosts around 20,000 residents, but now that number swells to 170,000,” stated family doctor Željko Žižić, as reported by N1 Zagreb. The island has nine doctors plus one who is on a part-time contract, which pales in comparison to Rijeka, where there are over 70 clinics catering to a population of 110,000.
The oldest doctor on the island was unable to attend the protest due to work commitments, as there simply aren’t enough doctors to share the workload. “I am 80 years old, retired, but I put my retirement on hold and continue to work,” said Dr. Branka Tonković.
It is believed that tourist clinics could provide a potential solution to the ongoing healthcare challenges faced by the region.
