Expansion of Natural Gas Network in Greece
The Enaon EDA has laid out plans for 2024 that include the activation of the natural gas network in 12 new regions. By the end of this year, the distribution network will be operational in several cities including Livadeia, Kastoria, Argos Orestiko, Giannitsa, Florina, Veria, Karpenisi, Orestiada, Amfissa, and Alexandria, along with the Industrial Area of Patras. Additionally, the network was activated in Grevena in March.
Strategic Discussions and Future Investments
A meeting held between Alexandra Sdoukou, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, and Barbara Morgante, the CEO of Enaon, alongside Francesca Zanninotti, the CEO of Enaon EDA, focused on the progress of distribution network projects across the country and the future strategy of Greek companies under the Italgas group. The approved Development Program for Enaon EDA for 2024-2028 anticipates investments of approximately 770 million euros for the expansion of the network, which includes the construction of 2,625 kilometers of new pipelines, as well as modernization and digitization projects.
Future City Connections and Consumer Benefits
Looking ahead to 2025, plans are in place to supply seven additional cities with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), including Patras, Agrinio, Pyrgos, Ioannina, Arta, Preveza, and Igoumenitsa. In the Epirus region, it is estimated that the first consumer connections will be established in the summer of 2025.
Anticipated Consumer Impact
Sdoukou expressed her satisfaction with the project’s progress, stating, “By 2028, around 290,000 new consumers are expected to be connected.” She highlighted the rapid advancement and timely execution of natural gas distribution projects, noting that in 2024, twelve new areas will gain access to a cleaner, more economical energy source, benefiting households and the industrial sector alike by reducing operational costs.
Commitment to Innovation and Renewable Energy
Barbara Morgante, the CEO of Enaon, emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding and digitizing the natural gas distribution network in Greece. She remarked on the importance of their efforts in contributing to the country’s developmental process. By leveraging the expertise of the Italgas group, they aim to provide access to cleaner and more affordable energy, even in remote areas. Next year, they will begin replacing conventional meters with state-of-the-art “H2 ready” smart meters, capable of measuring various types of gas, including blends, which will offer significant benefits to consumers.
Network Coverage and Future Goals
It is noteworthy that Enaon EDA manages a network spanning 8,200 kilometers across nine regions of the country. The company is poised to welcome renewable gases, including biomethane and hydrogen, aligning with national and European energy transition goals.
