Increase in Foreign Visitors to Türkiye in the First Half of the Year
Recent statistics released on Wednesday indicate a nearly 10% increase in the number of international visitors to Türkiye during the first half of the year. This growth, alongside rising tourist revenues, underscores the continuing positive trend in the country’s tourism sector.
Visitor Numbers Surge
According to data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, approximately 21.6 million foreign nationals traveled to Türkiye between January and June, marking a 10.3% rise compared to the same timeframe last year.
When including Turkish citizens residing abroad, the total number of arrivals during these six months reached 26.1 million. Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy shared these insights during a press briefing in Istanbul, highlighting the significant growth.
Record Growth Compared to Previous Years
Ersoy noted a 13.9% increase in total arrivals compared to the first half of the previous year, and a remarkable 23.6% rise when looking back to 2019, a year often regarded as a peak for the tourism industry.
This increase in visitor numbers for the first half of the year extends a positive trend that is expected to culminate in a record total of 56.7 million arrivals by the end of 2023, with hopes of achieving the ambitious target of 60 million visitors for the current year.
Post-Pandemic Recovery and Future Projections
Reflecting on tourism trends from 2019 to 2024, Ersoy acknowledged the sharp decline in visitor numbers during the pandemic and the subsequent rebound. “Before the pandemic, we recorded 21.1 million visitors. That number dropped significantly during the pandemic, but we witnessed a recovery thereafter,” he explained, citing a rise to 19.5 million, then approximately 23 million, and now a record 26.1 million in the first half of this year.
The Minister also highlighted Türkiye’s quick recovery post-pandemic and projected a year-end increase of 5.8% in visitor numbers, affirming that growth is consistent with their targets.
Impact of Major Events on Tourism
Ersoy mentioned that the European Football Championship has positively impacted tourism in Türkiye, stating, “One of our objectives was to attract visitors throughout the year. The growth rate for off-season visitors has exceeded our annual average, which aligns with our goals.” He emphasized ongoing efforts to extend the tourism season into traditionally quieter months.
Monthly Trends and Expectations
In analyzing the monthly data, the Minister pointed out significant growth in passenger numbers from January to May 2023. “However, June saw a decline in growth rates, which we anticipate will continue into July and August, largely due to the effects of Euro 2024 and the Paris Olympics,” he noted.
While sector representatives have also remarked on a temporary slowdown, Ersoy remains optimistic about continued growth, albeit at a more measured pace. June’s arrivals still showed a 9.1% increase year-over-year, totaling 6.8 million visitors compared to 6.3 million in the same month of the previous year.
Leading Source Markets
In the first half of the year, the most significant number of arrivals was from Russia, with 2.7 million visitors, followed by other key markets.

Tourism Trends in Türkiye: A Growing Attraction
According to recent statements from the tourism minister, Türkiye has welcomed approximately 2.5 million visitors from Germany and 1.8 million from the United Kingdom. The minister noted that this influx demonstrates the impact of the Euro, suggesting a more balanced arrival rate from both Germany and Russia as the year progresses. He projected that the total arrivals from these nations could reach around 7 million, highlighting Türkiye’s appeal as a primary destination for German tourists.
Revenue Growth in the Tourism Sector
Minister Ersoy highlighted a continuous upward trend in tourism revenues during the first and second quarters of the year. In the first half of the year, Türkiye generated a staggering $23.7 billion (approximately TL 785.91 billion) in revenue, marking a record high for the country.
Expressing optimism for sustained growth, he stated, “We are on track to meet our year-end goal of $60 billion.” The average duration of stay for tourists was reported at 10.1 days during the first half of the year, a slight decrease from 11.1 days in 2023, with a year-end target of 9.7 days.
Positive Trends in Per Capita Income
Despite the minor drop in average stay duration, the minister emphasized that the per capita overnight income has shown a consistent positive trend from 2017 to 2024, reaching $109 in the first half of this year, an increase from $103 during the same period last year.
Tourism Income Insights
Data released by the national statistics office indicated an 11.8% increase in tourism income from April to June, totaling nearly $14.9 billion. Officials expect this growth to have a favorable impact on the current account deficit.
Trade Minister Ömer Bolat remarked on the growth of tourism revenues, which rose by 9.3% to $23.7 billion in the first half of 2024. He indicated that the trends of increasing exports and decreasing imports are likely to persist in the latter half of the year, further improving the foreign trade balance.
Future Expectations and Cultural Events
The minister also addressed the successful reopening of the Kariye Mosque, which has undergone extensive restoration and will open for worship on Fridays, with an entrance fee of 20 euros ($21.6) starting August 19. In addition, he highlighted the Türkiye Kültür Yolu Festivali, a vibrant cultural festival that intertwines tourism and local culture, which has now expanded to 16 cities and features a variety of activities, exhibitions, and concerts.
