Release Athens 2024: Behemoth, Testament, Pestilence
On Sunday, July 28, 2024, Release Athens 2024 will welcome Behemoth and Testament to Nea Skini Square.
Pioneers of extreme sound in Poland and leading representatives of thrash metal in the USA, respectively, will be joined by the Dutch band Pestilence, one of the top names in progressive death metal, for a unique night for metalheads everywhere.
Formed in 1991 by the enigmatic frontman and guitarist Adam “Nergal” Darski, Behemoth has played a crucial role in the now legendary extreme metal scene.
Behemoth: A Force in Extreme Metal
Behemoth is a Polish extreme metal band that has made a significant impact on the music scene over the past few decades. While their roots are undeniably in black metal, thanks to Nergal’s unique vision, they have evolved into one of the most distinctive bands of recent years.
The band’s early releases, “Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic)” (1995) and “Grom” (1996), established them as a formidable force in the underground metal scene. However, it was the groundbreaking albums “Satanica” (1999) and “Thelema.6” (2000) that brought them international recognition, showcasing their relentless intensity and the complexity of their compositions.

The Influence of Occultism and Mythology on Behemoth
Throughout their career, Behemoth have incorporated themes of occultism and mythology into their identity, evident in both their lyrics and aesthetics. The release of “Demigod” in 2004 marked a turning point not only for the band but for extreme metal as a whole.
Continuing to Push Boundaries
Despite facing opposition and legal challenges in their homeland, Behemoth continued to push boundaries with albums like “The Apostasy” (2007) and, of course, “The Satanist” (2014). The latter was not only acclaimed by the music press, but also reached the top of many charts.
The Best Metal Albums of the Decade
When it comes to the best metal albums of the decade, Behemoth definitely stands out. Their live performances, characterized by impressive stage presence and the imposing figure of Nergal, have solidified Behemoth’s reputation as one of the most unique and theatrical live acts in metal. That’s why we are particularly excited that they will be closing the curtains of Release Athens 2024.
A Legendary Thrash Metal Band: Testament
Formed in 1983 in California, Testament quickly rose to become one of the top names in the infamous Bay Area Thrash scene of the 80s, which played a crucial role in the explosion of heavy metal worldwide.
The Legacy of Testament
With their debut album, “The Legacy” (1987), Testament quickly gained a devoted following and stood out thanks to the intricate guitar solos of Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson, as well as Chuck Billy’s distinctive vocals. The follow-up was even more impressive with releases such as the unbeatable “The New Order” (1988), “Practice What You Preach” (1989), “Souls of Black” (1990), and of course the masterpiece “The Gathering,” which definitively placed them among the top representatives of thrash metal.
Known for their dynamic live performances and impressive chemistry among themselves, Testament has established themselves as one of the greatest bands in their genre. By combining the technicality of thrash metal with the energy of heavy metal, their sound creates a unique atmosphere in every show they perform.
The Timeless Legacy of Pestilence
Pestilence is one of those bands that stand the test of time, leaving behind a great legacy that continues to influence the metal scene over the four decades of their existence.
Emerging from the Dutch Metal Scene
Pestilence is one of the pioneering bands that emerged from the Dutch extreme metal scene of the 80s. While many of their contemporaries have since retired, they remain vital, relevant, and ambitious. Founder, Patrick Mameli, on vocals and guitar, is gearing up to release two new albums and embark on a tour.
Pestilence: A Journey Through European Metal
Formed in Enschede, in the eastern part of the Netherlands, in 1986, Pestilence quickly caught the attention of the country’s premier metal record label, Roadrunner. With albums like the debut “Malleus Maleficarum” (1988), the legendary “Consuming Impulse” (1989), the impressive “Testimony of The Angels” (1991), and the experimental “Spheres” (1993), they established themselves at the forefront of the European extreme metal scene, constantly touring.
After several lineup changes that led to two hiatuses, Pestilence made a comeback in 2018, with a tour across Europe scheduled for 2024.
Exciting News from the Band
The band is back with a bang, ready to prove that their story is far from over and that they remain an uncompromising and essential group, with a unique sound and enduring appeal that has stood the test of decades. Their upcoming album, “Portals”, featuring brand new material, is set to be released next fall, while “Levels of Perception” will include reimaginings of the band’s classic songs.
