Early Alert Declared in Natural Gas Sector to Ensure Energy Security in Moldova
Today, the Exceptional Situations Commission has announced a state of early alert in the natural gas sector to safeguard the energy security of the Republic of Moldova. This decision comes in response to information provided by the Ministry of Energy regarding the potential risks of gas supply disruptions due to military activities near the border interconnection point between Russia and Ukraine, specifically in Sudja.
Military Control and Potential Consequences
The Ukrainian army has reportedly taken control of the Sudja station, which is crucial for the transit of Russian gas, including supplies to Transnistria. Officials have warned that if this transit is interrupted, the MGRES power plant will cease operations, necessitating energy imports from Romania.
Current Situation and Preparedness
Commission members have confirmed that, at this moment, there are no immediate interruptions or risks of disruptions. The establishment of this alert will equip responsible institutions with the necessary tools for thorough monitoring and swift intervention if required, as stated in a press release from the Government.
